THE AURORA

Professional Project (za bor architects)

Murmansk, Russia / 2020
Description:

A project for a group of tourist houses for observation of the aurora borealis (polar lights), suitable for both single and family visits. My mentor gave me a task to almost produce an initial proposal fully to be presented to a client. Although he controlled the development process, I was given ample amount of freedom to find the best architectural solutions. The design is contextually inspired by the vernacular architecture of Kola peninsula native tribes, defined by local climate characteristics, which was enhanced by the most contemporary architecture of the Arctic. Starting with an abstract shape inspired by vernacular architecture, it eventually evolved into a more conventional content and explores construction qualities of client-requested cross-laminated timber in the same agenda. The house can be both placed directly on the ground or raised on stilts, depending on weather conditions. The proposal contains all the necessary infrastructure for a comfortable stay, including a kitchen, bathroom, and fireplace.
